- Dementia is a general term used to describe changes in cognition that progress over time and interfere with an individual’s ability to function independently.
- There are several different types of dementia as shown on the diagram below.

- Memory loss
- Inability to sequence steps to accomplish a task
- Reduced ability to use abstract thinking and solve problems
- Changes in the ability to use language
- Reduced focus and attention
