  • Dementia is a general term used to describe changes in cognition that progress over time and interfere with an individual’s ability to function independently.
  • There are several different types of dementia as shown on the diagram below.

  • Memory loss
  • Inability to sequence steps to accomplish a task
  • Reduced ability to use abstract thinking and solve problems
  • Changes in the ability to use language
  • Reduced focus and attention
  • Inability to state the date, day, and/or location
