Testing Biomarkers for Amyloid and TAU

BIOMARKERS 

  • Biomarkers are measurable biologic indicators that can be used to diagnose a condition or disease such as Alzheimer’s Disease.  They can also be measured to determine the effectiveness of a treatment or track the progression of disease.    

TYPES OF BIOMARKER TESTS 

Blood Tests: Precivity AD2 plus APOE 

  • This test measures abnormal amounts of proteins like amyloid or tau in the blood.  
  • Benefits: Less expensive than imaging tests.  
  • Limitations: Not covered by Medicare and some insurance companies, maximum cost typically around $450. Financial assistance is available.   
  • Risks: Requires a needle stick in the arm. 

Spinal Fluid Test (Lumbar Puncture) 

  • This test measures amyloid and tau proteins in the fluid around the brain and spine.  
  • Benefits: Usually covered by insurance.  
  • Limitations: Not all patients are eligible, and not all patients can tolerate this procedure.  
  • Risks: Requires a needle stick in your lower back to collect spinal fluid. May cause headache or discomfort.  

Brain Scans: Amyloid PET Scan  

  • What it tests: Looks at the brain to check for changes, like amyloid plaques or tau tangles.  
  • Benefits: Helps show early changes in the brain.  
  • Limitations: Expensive and not widely available. Approved by Medicare but not all private insurance. Authorization may or may not be granted by insurance.  
  • Risks: Exposure to a small amount of radiation.

  • Determine if symptoms are from Alzheimer’s or another condition.  
  • Start treatment early to help slow progression of symptoms.  
  • Help plan for the future with your family.
