Meet the Board: Joe Marley
Joe Marley cares. And he cares about others who care.
A Charlotte native, Joe grew up aware of Dr. Edwards as a heart surgeon. They attended the same schools and shared athletic coaches, although a number of years apart. He’d heard about MMC from friends who were patients or caregivers, but he didn’t fully understand the impact until he became a caregiver himself.
“My father-in-law is living with dementia, and the care he receives at MMC is just extraordinary. Dr. Edwards – and all the providers – interact with not only the patient but also with my wife and her siblings. This practice understands what families are going through and there is a level of sensitivity and grounded counsel in managing complex family dynamics that is unlike anyplace else. It’s an art and a science, and I had to learn more.”
Now that Joe is more deeply involved as a board member, he sees that for MMC, everything is personal. “Caregivers pour heart and soul into their loved one. It’s a test of character, love, all of it. And having a practice like MMC on your side is just invaluable. Now that I’ve gotten to know more, I see why – many MMC staff members were caregivers themselves. The level of compassion and engagement is unmatched.”
Joe is excited to be a part of MMC’s next chapter, and he plays a critical role in fundraising for an expansion of the practice. “Right now, our capacity doesn’t match the need. I believe MMC is best in the nation for patient care – and we do an even better job with family care. I’m proud to help bring this of care to more families.”
