Do Memory Supplements Work?

We’ve all seen the ads – pills that promise to sharpen memory, soothe joints, stop tremors, or help us sleep better. They’re on TV, online, and in magazines. But do they work?

The short answer: not necessarily. “Dietary supplements are part of a largely unregulated industry,” says Dr. Aris Chaconas.

“They don’t have to prove effectiveness, they’re only required to list their ingredients accurately and avoid making outright false claims.”

That leaves a lot of room for creative marketing. Phrases like “supports brain health” sound promising, but they’re not the same as “improves memory” or “reverses cognitive decline.” Similarly, “clinically tested” doesn’t mean “clinically proven.” The language is designed to suggest what we want to believe.

If you look closely, you’ll often find a disclaimer in fine print: “not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease” or “not evaluated by the FDA.” That’s a red flag.

Vitamins and supplements can be helpful, but only when there’s a proven nutritional deficiency. “It’s important to identify any deficiencies with your doctor,” says Dr. Chaconas. “Taking more than you need won’t help and could cause harm.”

At MMC, we keep a close eye on new supplements and review the latest research. So far, we haven’t found any that show clear, proven benefits for memory or other neurological conditions.

Because the FDA doesn’t evaluate supplements for safety or effectiveness, it’s essential to consult your doctor before starting anything new. Your physician understands your medical history and can help avoid dangerous interactions with other medications.

Dr. Chaconas’s advice? “Talk to us! All the MMC providers are happy to discuss anything you’re wondering about. We respect your questions and appreciate the conversation.”

Dr. Aris Chaconas has been a neurologist for over 30 years and has been with MMC since 2017. He spent four years as Regional Director of Neuroscience for Pfizer and brings a unique perspective from the pharmaceutical field to the practice.
